Romain Du Roi - Research Paper

Hello!

Abstract:

In Paris 1692, the Sun King, Louis XIV, commissioned the creation of a royal exclusive typeface, Romain du Roi. Through this act, the world of typography, printing, and typographic design changed in a revolutionary way. The joint world of punch cutters and mathematics was created, that’s resulting in the first “digital” typeface. This new system created many challenges with parameters and posed humanist issues that were unknown. In my paper, I will argue that by establishing this typeface and the ways it was created, it allows us, designers, in the future the ability to create “perfect” typefaces. By answering this main question, my goal is to present a side of typographic design we now take for granted.

Thanks!
